as i am rereading the responses i gotta say, some folks could use a sense of humor and not be so knee-jerk in there reactions.
Funkydrummer- have you heard Bootsys "this boot was made for funkin"? not his best album but he plays drums on most of it and his drumming is fascinating. dirty. gutbucket stuff.

Funny. Actually I kinda joking. I quoted a King Missile song "Sensitive Artist" But sure, there is a lot of crap jazz out there. I get sick of listening to standards.
I like fusion, but I am very picky in my tastes.
Fusion was bringing rock into jazz. I kinda like it the other way around, bringing fusion into rock, mainly metal.
Anyway, rock and roll. Enjoy listening to whomever those artists are... [img]tongue.gif[/img] Links?

What I mean when I say that is.. if reviewing the way the music is made, they are fundimentally the same.
Both albums are composed song structures with melodies and incredible amounts of improvisation from these basis.
Now of course.. the "tone" of the two albums is fairly different. Blue being far more relaxed.. but in my opinion no different from Document in it's improvisational elements.
We have different musicians pretty much doing the same thing. Improving and comping through various forms off various melodies.
So in that sense, fundimentally they are nearly identical.
Tonally far apart, "mood" wise very different.
Both still are pretty much some of the greatest musicians sitting down and doing what they love to do. Play music and ideas off as they come with stimuli and structure invloved in the form of melody and form.
I Totally agree with the Keyboard Sounds, why do they still make these?
David Garfield is a monster on Piano, but somehow he just keeps on using these Synths that sounds so... yeah, you get the point [img]wink.gif[/img]
But the funnier thing is that pop/rock artists are starting to use synths too. Jimmy Eat World uses Synths like mad, and you can't call yourself an indie muscisian without having a Moog in your studio.
I love when fusion is played on piano instruments like a B3, a wurnitzer ( spellcheck please! [img]smile.gif[/img] ) or just some very humble string sounds.
But i do think that fusion today, is played with less Synths'n such, it has gained a greater Harmonic and Melodic focus, instead of a shooting contest where you compete with anyone else about who can shoot as many notes down. '
And all those altered chords man.. They're not used so much anymore.
But you know, all fusionbands where not the same back then.. Take Koinonia, what a band...
Is Hiromi fusion? I'd say so myself..
But I hear ya.. nothing like fantastic music form a plin piano, bass and drums.
I don't want to stir, and I think Vinnie is an incredible musician, but anyone who compares 'Document' to 'Kind of Blue': is insane! [img]confused.gif[/img] [img]eek.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img] [img]tongue.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img]

The Name Is Bootsy Baby". But that's a great album, and Bootsy is definetely a solid drummer. Hell, he played drums on "Flash Light"! 'Nuff said.Quote:

I cannot think of anything more boring than Allan Holdsworthless noodling away while some drummer accents his runs with splash cymbals, "nines," huminas and brickas and all the trappings of egotistical drumming.
Well,I guess one man's meat is another man's poison. For me listening to Holdsworth is a completely emotional experience and I don't really think about the chops involved in playing it. It hits me on a purely organic level. But that's just me......Actually,I think it may be better than sex!!!

Allan Holdsworth is one of those artists who IMHO transcends style, always has. I've been listening to the "All Night Wrong" live CD with Wackerman/Johnson, and to me it's the best of what "fusion" is--completely explorative, organic, melodic and fresh. Dense, but totally without ego. Busy but not masturbatory or "lick-y". Exactly how I'd describe early fusion as well.
